Ours are selected bees possessing the most sought after characteristics, such as: docility, low tendency to swarm and good productivity.

If you are at the beginning of your beekeeping business, here is some information for you that will clarify your ideas. We will analyze the topic by specifying what bee cores are, what is their use in beekeeping and when to buy cores for your apiary.

What are bee nucs

The bee cores consist of a large group of worker bees , the queen bee and frames.

The frames are special wooden constructions inside the hive that the bees will fill.

Usually the most common format by which the product is sold is on 5 frames. The latter are composed of:

  • 3 frames of capped brood at 70% (at least);
  • 2 frames with honey supplies .

In nuclei they contain enough worker bees to completely cover all five honeycombs on both sides.

The main difference with bee packs is that the nuclei have frames and therefore also the brood and honey. The bee packs, on the other hand, are artificial "naked" swarms made up of many young workers (with or without a queen) and without frames.

What are nucs for in beekeeping?

bee cores are a very useful tool for the creation of new colonies. The cores are also used to reinforce hives that have weakened.

There are so many reasons why a swarm gets weaker. The main reasons are almost always related to swarming, pollution or due to diseases and infestations by parasites.

When we use cores in beekeeping , we create new colonies. This step can generate a progressive strengthening of the species as the swarms will tend to improve their genetic heritage by increasing their resistance to disease.

Some important rules for the formation of a bee nucleus

The formation of nuclei is a process that requires a lot of experience and above all patience. The families selected for the new colony must be followed very carefully throughout the autumn period and especially in spring when natural swarming occurs.

To create new colonies it is advisable to wait for the birth of the drones and proceed only after the formation of the queen bees and royal cells.

When to buy bee nucs

Usually the cores are sold during the spring period (March-April depending on the climatic conditions of the area) but they can also be prepared in different periods.

We also have bee cores available for the month of May! If you want to buy bee cores for your apiary, with Laterza beekeeping it will be very simple.
