Buckfast and Ligustiche queens: what are the differences?
The queen bees of the Buckfast breed and of the Ligustica breed are among the most requested in beekeeping. Both types have excellent requirements that make them the perfect species for beekeeping.
The main difference between the two breeds is contained in their genetic makeup and some bodily and behavioral characteristics.
Buckfast queen bees:
Buckfast queens are hybrid bees. This means that this species derives from the crossing of several races. The combination of different genetic profiles has made the Buckfast breed very strong and resistant over time.
Buckfast queens are generally more robust than normal European queens and are able to adapt more easily to any type of climate. In the case of a Buckfast queen bee, it is possible to note that these specimens have a darker brown body. Buckfast bees in general are known for their gentle nature and high disease resistance. The most sought after feature by farmers is their excellent honey production.
The queen bees of the Buckfast breed are very strong and disease-resistant bees, this is because the Buckfast species managed to survive the attack of numerous parasites that in the early twentieth century decimated a large number of bees present throughout Europe . Buckfast bees also have the least tendency to swarm.
Ligustic queen bees:
Now let's move on to the Ligustica species. The queen bees of the Ligustica breed are Italian bees . In fact, this breed has origins from our country but nowadays it has become one of the most popular and popular Apis Mellifera species in the world.
Ligustic bees tend to be more docile than other honey bee breeds due to their long history of breeding with humans. The main differences between the Ligustica and Buckfast breed are contained in the shape of the abdomen and in the size of the wings. Buckfast queens have a rounded abdomen, while ligustic queens have a more elongated abdomen. The ligustica species then has a much lighter color. Its body approaches yellow / golden shades.
Buckfast queens also have longer body hair than ligustic queens. The reason is that they need more protection from cold weather conditions. The Ligustica bee is very docile and hardworking with a tendency to produce a high quantity of honey.
As far as the Ligustica species is concerned, our bees have obtained the morphological recognition of the breed and therefore the Apis mellifera ligustica breed certificate 2022. The certification comes from a body authorized by the National Register of queen bee breeders.
