If Buckfast today is a name that immediately recalls to a variety of queen bees, back in 1915, it was just a small village in Devon, England, where a Benedictine abbey once stood. In that year Father Adam was entrusted with the task of taking care of the production of honey and the apiary present in the abbey. The next year, however, father Adam, such as all the beekeepers in England, had to face a terrible die-off of bees caused by the woodie mite. To preserve the production of honey, the monk began to try to crossbreed some of the most resistant bees of the world with the English honeycombs. The first attempt was with the ligustic bees from Piemonte (Italy), already present in England, which survived the blight, but the experiment turned out to be a failure. Soon after, he attempted to crossbreed the drones that survived and bee queens from France, but this attempt too, went wrong. The monk's experiments continued especially during his travels, which aimed to find bees that were resistant to parasites and were productive. So he crossbreeded the English drones both with queen bees from Anatolia and with Apis Millifera Cecropia and with African queen bees, Monticola and Scutellata.
