Le origini

The Ligustica bee is a bee originally from Italy. This subspecies was formed by surviving the ice age as the genetically different subspecies of Spain and Sicily. It is the most widespread subspecies in the world among honey bees, due to the appreciation it has among beekeepers, as it has proven to be adaptable to most climates from subtropical to temperate, although it has shown less adaptation to tropical humid climates.

Having evolved in Italy in a geographical position that favors the growth of a wide range of nectariferous plants and poor in honey predators, the Italian bee is tending to be docile and very laborious.

Among the numerous characteristics of this subspecies it is important to remember their constant energy and productivity. Ligustic bees have an explosive evolution in spring because:

·        They give life to a good harvest;

·        They build large colonies;

·        They quickly build honeycombs.

The extinction risk

to FAI-Italian Beekeepers Federation has provocatively declared that there are many reasons to believe that the Italian bee is at risk of extinction, as well as other honey bee subspecies. Although it may seem strange to think about the risk of extinction for an animal that has been successfully bred for centuries and is the most widespread subspecies in the world, an extremely worrying death is underway and more and more often the number of bees born does not exceed that of dead bees . The reasons for considering this animal at risk are numerous; these include the introduction of new "spurious" species and, suspected, insecticide treatments based on imidacloprid, a product already banned in France since 2002. Fortunately, neonicotinoids have been definitively removed from the market all over the world, so the bees, which previously were in serious danger, are now slowly recovering in many countries.

Suitable for the production of honey, pollen and highly productive, Ligustic bees are generally available from May to October.

Apicoltura Laterza deals with the sale and breeding of bees of all species.

The Ligustiche queen bees that we market are usually available in packs of 1.5 kg, moreover our bees are disease-free.
